Martha M. Smith Named Assistant Professor at Palmer School
August 21, 1998 - Dr. Martha M. Smith will be joining the faculty of
the Palmer School of Library and Information Science, based at Long Island
University's C.W. Post Campus in Brookville, NY. Her appointment as Assistant
Professor is effective September 1, 1998. She will reside in Port Jefferson,
NY.
Dr. Smith has a B.A. in history, an M.Div. and a Ph.D. in religion from
Duke University, and an M.L.S. and Ph.D. from the School of Information
and Library Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research
is on ethics and information technology, including issues of privacy, access,
ownership and security. Since 1992, she has been publishing on information
ethics, most recently with a summary and analysis of literature of the
field in the Annual Review of Information Science and Technology (1997).
Palmer School Dean Anne Woodsworth welcomed this appointment, stating,
"Dr. Smith's appointment to the faculty will strengthen the School
considerably by bringing to us expertise on ethics in the information age
as well as the application of qualitative research methods in the field
of information studies."
Since 1995, Dr. Smith has served on the faculty of the School of Library
and Information Science of Indiana University. Prior to this, Dr. Smith
taught in the library and information science programs at the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UNC-Greensboro, and Emporia State University.
For eleven years, Dr. Smith was the director of the library at Saint Mary's
College in Raleigh, North Carolina. During that time, she was active in
automation and networking activities among the independent colleges in
North Carolina.
The Palmer School offers an innovative M.S. program that integrates
information and library sciences and is accredited by the American Library
Association. The School offers a B.S. in Information Transfer, a Ph.D.
in Information Studies and certificate programs in archives and records
management.
The master's degree is also offered in Manhattan at New York University's
Bobst Library. In September 1998, selected master's level courses will
be available at the Mortola Library at Pace University in Pleasantville.
