Nov. 5, 1998 Conference: "Good Dying: Is It Possible?"

August 27, 1998 - Several prominent ethicists, pain specialists and legislative analysts will lecture and run panel sessions at the Thursday, November 5, 1998 conference, "Good Dying: Is It Possible?" at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, NY. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Gold Coast Room.

The conference, sponsored by the new Long Island Center for Ethics at C.W. Post, is designed to help caregivers improve end-of-life care by bringing to light the ethics and practice of care for those with life-limiting illnesses. A distinguished panel - consisting of ethicists, doctors, administrators, nurses, social workers and policy experts - will offer analysis of current end-of-life issues, examine collaborations between hospice programs and nursing homes, consider the role of pain control and symptom management, describe the role of state initiatives in improving end-of-life care, and identify the psychosocial and spiritual needs of patients and families. Guest speakers include:

  • Carl H. Coleman, J.D., Executive Director, New York State Task Force on Life and the Law.
  • Dr. Robert C. Cassidy, Director of Medical Ethics, Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
  • Amber Jones, President and Chief Executive Officer of the New York State Hospice Association.
  • James T. D'Olimpio, M.D., Director of Palliative Medicine, North Shore University Hospital.
  • Stephen Unger, Chaplain, Chaplaincy Services, Stony Brook University Hospital.
  • Mary Gravina, C.S.W., Director of Bereavement, Hospice Care Network.
  • Cella Strow, R.N., M.P.S., Administrator, Grace Plaza Comprehensive Care Center.
  • Marianne Gillan, Executive Director, St. Charles Hospice.
  • Connie Raffa, J.D., Arent Fox.

The event is designed for administrators, patient advocates, bereavement counselors, dietitians, hospice team members, nurses, pastoral caregivers, psychologists, ombudspersons, and social workers.

An educational resource and interdisciplinary initiative, the Center for Ethics sponsors seminars and workshops on ethical issues in today's society. Led by experts and scholars, the Center will become a forum where Long Islanders - from students to corporate leaders - can tackle ethical issues in a variety of arenas. Conferences and round table discussions, led by C.W. Post faculty and representatives from the Long Island medical, business, communication and education communities, support public awareness and understanding of ethical concerns and enhance moral sensibility. Long Island Center for Ethics is based within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the C.W. Post Campus. The director of the center is Dr. Ellen M. McGee, an adjunct professor of philosophy at C.W. Post, and a recognized expert on medial ethics, including end-of-life care rights and enhancement technologies.
