Local Resident Moderates Yale University Symposium

August 31, 1998 -- Jeffrey Kane, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Education at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, was a presenter and key moderator at the 30th anniversary symposium of the Yale School of Medicine, titled "Child Development: The Foundation of Education." Featuring a keynote speech by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, the symposium welcomed prominent educators from across the country. Dr. Kane, President of the New York State Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, moderated a panel titled "New Directions for Teacher and Administrator."

In his address, Dr. Kane advocated the need for a combined effort between working teachers and university colleagues and stressed the need for student teachers to spend more time in schools. "We cannot teach people if you're not out in the field," Kane stated. "We have to know the culture of schools, the changing demographics, and the implications of your theories because of the rapid development in teaching. Prospective educators need to get into the schools early and often; they should not only be in classrooms but also involved in site-based management teams, parent/teacher associations, and, whenever possible, out in the community."

Among his accomplishments, Dr. Kane serves as executive editor of a peer-reviewed educational journal, Encounter: Education for Meaning and Social Justice. He is also the author of Beyond Empiricism: Michael Polanyi Reconsidered and In Fear of Freedom: Democracy and Education in America. His most recent book, an edited work, Education, Information and Transformation, was released this month by Merrill (Prentice Hall). Dr. Kane, appointed dean of the School of Education in 1996, oversees one of the largest and most comprehensive teacher education, counseling, speech pathology and education administration programs in New York State. C.W. Post's School of Education, which offers courses on both the undergraduate and graduate levels, has several clinical laboratories on campus including a fully accredited speech and hearing center and an Interactive Technologies Center.
