Obsessive Compulsive Order: Contemporary Paper Sculpture
September 14 through November 9
The fascination and complexity of the human body is the focus of the newest
exhibit at the Hillwood Art
Museum, Obsessive Compulsive Order: Contemporary Paper Sculpture. The
exhibit, exploring not only the figurative tradition of the body's structure
but also the representation of human feelings, emotions and conflicts,
is on display September 14 through November 9. The Hillwood Art Museum
is located on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville.
"These works make reference not to the cliches of the figurative
tradition, but instead, to hair, skin, bones, orifices, sexual appendages,
scars and internal organs," said Judith K. Brodsky, writer and art
professor at Rutgers University. "They are obsessive and compulsive
in the sense of revealing the rules we make and the taboos we establish
about the body."
According to Cynthia Thompson, curator for the exhibit and resident
of West Hempstead, the 10 New York artists break through unspoken obsessions
and compulsions. "They are dealing with the unmentionables, upsetting
our body images and connecting us back to the real, to the body functions,
to the needs and desires that we compulsively and obsessively hide from
our consciousness."
The opening reception will be held Wednesday, September 16 from 5 to
8 p.m. at the museum. Hillwood Art Museum is located in Hillwood Commons
on the C.W. Post Campus, Northern Boulevard (Route 25A), Brookville. The
Museum is open Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday
