How do I register for classes at the C.W. Post
Campus?
All students must visit their major academic counselor
or a graduate advisor in order to complete their registration. Undergraduate students
who have not selected a major should go to the Academic Counselor
for Undeclared students (Kumble Hall, 2nd floor) for advising and
registration. Graduate students who have not selected a major
should go to the graduate advisor in the department in which they are taking
courses.
Is there a list of accredited programs/plans offered by Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus?
A list of programs/plans offered by the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University is available by clicking on the link: Programs/Plans
What is an Academic Program/Plan?
The academic program refers specifically to the college and level of study of a student. For example: A student with a program of CEDUG is enrolled in the C.W. Post Campus, School of Education, Graduate Program. The academic plan is the area of study which includes the degree and name of the plan. For example: CEBA - is a plan designation for C.W. Post Campus, Bachelor of Arts in English.
How do I change my academic program/plan?
Undergraduate students wishing to change their program/plan
should meet with the academic counselor of the program/plan they desire
to enter and then notify their former counselor to transfer their
file to the new academic counselor. Graduate students should
contact their graduate advisors and indicate they desire to change
their program/plan in order for the proper paperwork to be processed. In
both situations, students wishing to change their major must be
acceptable to the department receiving the request. The actual processing of all changes to the program or plan stack of a student are handled by the Office of Records and Registration.
If I want to enroll or make changes to my schedule
during the program change period and thereafter; are there required signatures
that need to be affixed to my enrollment change form.
Yes, in consultation with your academic advisor,
students can make changes to their schedule.
Is there a map of the campus available online for students to gain access to?
Click on this link CAMPUS MAP to gain access to a copy of the map of the C.W. Post Campus.
How many units do I need to complete in order
to move up in class ranking?
To be considered a sophomore, a student must have
earned 28 units; a junior, 60 units; a senior, 90 units; a
graduating senior, usually 110 units.
How do I earn Life Experience units for work
I have done throughout my life?
Life Experience units is given in recognition of
knowledge obtained in some way other than study in a two or four
year accredited college. The knowledge must be equivalent to what
would be learned in a C.W. Post undergraduate course and the applicant
must be able to demonstrate such knowledge. No student may apply
for life experience credit before completing six credits at C.W.
Post or during the last 32 units of residency. A maximum of 60
units can be earned through this process. The student must apply
at the Office of Life Experience, (516) 299-2445.
What is a unit/credit? Quality Points? How do I calculate
my G.P.A.? What is a unit ?
A unit/credit is defined as 55 minutes of classroom work
per week, completed in one 14 week semester, or its equivalent,
plus appropriate out-of-class assignments and readings. Beginning with the Summer/Fall 2007 enrollment periods, a unit is the term that will apply to the classroom work per week.
Effective September 1, 2003, Quality Points are
computed by multiplying the number of units in a course
- by 4.00 for grade A
- by 3.67 for grade A-
- by 3.33 for grade B+
- by 3.00 for grade B
- by 2.67 for grade B-
- by 2.33 for grade C+
- by 2.00 for grade C
- by 1.67 for grade C-
- and by 1.00 for grade D
For courses in which the grade of F has been
earned, no quality points are assigned. To derive the quality point
ratio, divide the total number of quality points by the total number
of units, including those failed courses. The grades of W,
UW, and P are not counted in the computation, nor are
the grades for courses taken at another college or university.
What is the consequence of dropping below 12
credits(units) for an undergraduate ?
When an undergraduate full-time student, who has
been billed at the flat-rate (12 to 18 units), drops below 12 units
during the enrollment change period, his charges are recalculated
on the per unit basis and the difference between the revised per
unit charge and the flat rate is refunded.

If you are a continuing student, all course work taken to date
remains as is - that is, your earned grade point average (GPA) to
date (August 31, 2003) remains the same and is not affected by the
new system. All grades earned beginning with the Fall 2003 semester
will fall under the new quality point system. A notation will be
made on your transcript indicating when the new grade system was
implemented.
Can I have old grades changed to reflect the new grading policy?
No, transcript will be re-calculated according to the new grading
system. The GPA earned through September 1, 2003 remains intact,
and from September 2, 2003 on, the new grading system will be in
place. Grades earned after September 2, 2003 are subject to the
new grading system.

- C average is equal
to 2.00
- C- average is equal to 1.67
- D below average is
equal to 1.00
- P passed
- The grade of F signifies
failure.
- Numerical value of a letter grade
is left to the discretion of the professor.
- A grade of incomplete (INC)
indicates that some of the course requirements have not been completed.
- Students who receive grades of
W, UW, INC or Pass/Fail in the Fall or Spring semester
are not eligible for inclusion
on the Dean's or Honor's List for that academic year.
What is the difference between a "W"
(Withdrawal) and a "UW" (Unauthorized Withdrawal)?
"W" indicates a student-initiated
withdrawal from a course after the change of program period through
the last day for grade change options.
"UW" indicates an
unauthorized withdrawal. An unauthorized withdrawal is given by
a professor when a student stops attending a course and does not
officially withdraw from a class.
What is considered to be a full-time student
at the C.W. Post Campus?
An undergraduate student taking between 12-18 units
is considered to be full-time; a graduate student taking at least
9 units is considered full-time. An undergraduate student who
wishes to exceed 18 units in the regular semester must have a
minimum 3.25 G.P.A. and must obtain the permission of his or her
academic counselor and department chair. The appropriate dean's
permission is also required for any extraordinary work load exceeding
21 units.
How long do I have to complete the requirements
for an Incomplete?
A grade of INC (Incomplete) indicates that some
of the course requirements have not been completed. When you have
submitted the outstanding work, your instructor will issue a change
of grade giving you the appropriate grade. The grade of
"I" is printed on the transcript along with the final
earned grade and the date the work was completed. A permanent
grade of INC will remain on a student's transcript if the work is
not completed by the end of the following full semester.
When will I receive my grades?
Grades for the semester are usually sent out about
2-3 weeks after the last day of finals for a particular semester.
However, students may see their grades using the Student Information
System. Do not contact the Records Office for information about
your grades. Federal law prohibits grades from being given out over
the phone or to a third party.
How does my name appear on the Dean's List or
Honor's List?
Eligibility for the Dean's and Honor's lists is
determined by grades earned in the regular academic semesters. Summer Session grades are not considered.
Students who receive grades of incomplete (INC or I), Failure (F),
Withdrawal (W), Unauthorized Withdrawal (UW), or Pass/Fail (P/F)
in either semester are not eligible. In addition, students
repeating courses are not eligible. An average of 3.50 in
12 or more completed units is required for inclusion on the Dean's
List. An average of 3.50 for part-time students who have completed
6 units in an academic term is required for inclusion on the
Honor's List. Students are not eligible for inclusion on the
Dean's or Honor's list if they have any grade of W, INC, UW or P/F
in either the Fall or Spring semester. Students who are awarded
Deans' or Honor's List designation should receive their certificates
from their school. Effective Fall 2007, both Deans' and Honors' list citations will be earned each semester (Fall, Spring only).
