IS THERE AN EXTRA FEE FOR THE ANCILLARY SERVICES?

Everything is included in the cost for the semester. There are no extra fees for the ancillary services.

HOW DO STUDENTS KNOW IF THEY ARE ENTITLED TO A NOTETAKER, READER AND/OR AMANUENSIS (SCRIBE)?

Students needing notetakers, readers and/or an amanuensis must submit documentation with their Diagnostic Evaluation Report that such a service is necessary due to the nature of their Learning Disability.

HOW DO STUDENTS OBTAIN NOTETAKERS?

Students speak to their course professors and indicate that a notetaker is needed for that course. The notes of the prospective notetaker are reviewed by the professor to ensure adequacy. The professor then refers the student to the Academic Resource Center and the Academic Resource Center employs him/her for the semester.

DO STUDENTS NEED TO TAKE THEIR OWN NOTES IF THEY HAVE A NOTETAKER?

A notetaker's work is not a substitute for the student's work. A student must take his/her own notes. A notetaker may not be used to cover a student's absence from class. The student must be present in class to receive a notetaker's work.

WHAT HAPPENS IF RECORDINGS FOR THE BLIND AND DYSLEXIC CANNOT PROVIDE A STUDENT'S TEXTBOOKS ON TAPE?

The Academic Resource Center has a computer program available to students which converts text to speech.

MAY STUDENTS USE THE CENTER'S TEXTBOOKS RATHER THAN BUY THEIR OWN BOOKS FOR CLASS?

The books purchased by the Program are not to be used by students to replace buying the book. It is the students' responsibility to purchase all texts and supplemental texts for their courses.

HOW MANY TUTORS MAY A PROGRAM STUDENT HAVE DURING THE SEMESTER?

A program student works with at least one Learning Assistant for two hours per week during the semester. However, a student may opt to work in the Center every day for as many hours as needed at no additional cost. He/She may also work with a subject tutor for each of his/her classes.

HOW DOES THE CENTER COMMUNICATE WITH PROFESSORS ABOUT ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER STUDENTS?

At the beginning of each semester students are required to make the first contacts with their professors. AFTER the students have introduced themselves to their professors and stated that they are enrolled in the Center, the Center sends a letter to each student's professors. The letter states that the student is enrolled in the Center, that documentation supporting the student's learning disability is on file at the Center and indicates the services the student may require. Mid-term reports are also sent to each professor requesting a student's attendance record, participation in class, test grades and a projected final grade.

IS AN AMANUENSIS AVAILABLE TO A STUDENT WHEN HE/SHE IS TAKING EXAMS?

A student's comprehensive Psycho-Educational Evaluation must indicate that due to the individual's learning disability, an amanuensis is needed. The student must make arrangements through the Center and request an amanuensis for an exam. It is the student's responsibility to inform the course professor that he/she is requesting an amanuensis. Center staff will make arrangements for an amanuensis when signed test forms are approved by the professor and returned to the Center.

ARE STUDENTS ABLE TO USE THE COMPUTERS IN THE ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER?

A computer lab is available to all Center students. In addition, each Learning Assistant has a computer on his/her desk.

DOES SOMEONE IN THE ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER HELP STUDENTS REGISTER FOR CLASSES?

All students at C.W. Post are assigned an Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisors help the students develop a Plan of Study for their four years of classes at C.W. Post. The Director and/or Associate Director of the Academic Resource Center meets with all Academic Resource Center students to help them in their selection of classes and to oversee that they have a balanced course load.
