General Information

WHAT IS THE ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER?

The Academic Resource Center is a COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT PROGRAM designed for students diagnosed with a specific learning disability or ADD/ADHD at C.W. Post to help them achieve their academic potentials in a University setting.

HOW LONG HAS THE ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER BEEN IN EXISTENCE?

The Academic Resource Center began operation in the Fall of 1985.

HOW DOES THE ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER FIT INTO LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY?

The Academic Resource Center is a Program at Long Island University/C.W. Post Campus. It is not on any other campus of the University. The Center reports to the Associate Provost for Student Affairs.

HOW DOES THE ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER HELP A STUDENT REACH HIS/HER POTENTIAL?

Program students work with Learning Assistants on a one-to-one basis. An individualized program, outlining the student's strengths and needs, is designed by the Director for each student using information from the student's Diagnostic Evaluation Report. Students are guided and motivated to become independent, successful learners and self-advocates as they work with a Learning Assistant.

WHO ARE LEARNING ASSISTANTS?

Learning Assistants are men and women working on their first or second Master's Degree at C.W. Post. Many Learning Assistants have had classroom experience working in public, private and post-secondary schools on Long Island. All Learning Assistants are trained by the Director to work with learning disabled students.

DO THE LEARNING ASSISTANTS DO THE WORK FOR THE STUDENTS?

All course work is done by the student. All work is original and entirely composed by the student.

HOW DO THE LEARNING ASSISTANTS WORK WITH PROGRAM STUDENTS?

Learning Assistants help freshmen make the transition from high school to college. They assist all the students in time management, organizational skills, note-taking techniques, study skills and other necessary learning strategies. Mutually convenient times to work with the Learning Assistant on a one-to-one basis are arranged with each student. The times selected become an integral part of the student's schedule. Each student is totally responsibility for his/her attendance and participation in those meetings.

Each freshman must meet with a Learning Assistant a mandatory two hours per week. More hours may be scheduled if necessary. Sophomores, juniors and seniors are given the opportunity to schedule and contract more flexible contact hours with Academic Resource Center staff. They are required to contract and discuss their flexible times with the Director. No student may rearrange the contract without approval of Academic Resource Center staff.

WHAT ANCILLARY SERVICES ARE PROVIDED BY THE ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER?
Ancillary services available to the Academic Resource Center students include:

  • Notetakers for individual course lectures
  • Tutors trained to work with learning disabled students
  • Proctors for extended-time exams
  • Assistance with application to Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic to receive textbooks on tape

HOW LONG MAY A STUDENT RECEIVE ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER SUPPORT?

The Program at the Academic Resource Center is available to students as long as they are registered as undergraduates at Post, however, our goal is to have the Academic Resource Center students become independent learners and self advocates. The majority of Program students opt to handle their classwork on their own at the end of their sophomore or second semester of their junior years.

HOW MANY CREDITS MAY A STUDENT ENROLLED IN THE ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER TAKE EACH SEMESTER AT C.W. POST?

Freshmen enrolled in the Academic Resource Center are limited to 12 credits for their first semester course load, however, all freshmen must enroll in College 101 - Freshman Seminar for a total of 13 credits. After their first semester, Academic Resource Center students may enroll for the maximum number of credits permitted by the University. To be considered a full-time student and to dorm at C.W. Post, a student must register for 12 credits.

ARE THEIR ANY SPECIAL AND/OR REMEDIAL CLASSES AN ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER STUDENT MUST TAKE?

There are no special or remedial classes for learning disabled students at C.W. Post. All Academic Resource Center students are mainstreamed into regular college courses.

IS THERE A SUMMER PROGRAM?

The Academic Resource Center does not have a summer program. There are no special or separate summer requirements to be a part of the Program.

ARE COUNSELING SESSIONS WITH A PSYCHOLOGIST A REGULAR PART OF THE PROGRAM?

The Academic Resource Center does not mandate that students meet with a counselor, however, counseling is available when needed.

IS THERE A FEE FOR THE ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER?

There is an additional fee required at the beginning of each semester. The fee is a cost beyond those for tuition, room and board and books. Payment of the fee secures a slot in the Program for incoming freshmen and transfer students. The fee covers one-to-one contact with a Learning Assistant, small workshops, course and scheduling guidance, tutors, readers, notetakers, supervision of extended-time exams and use of computers.

HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE PART OF THE ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER?

At the present time there are 130 students in the Program.

HOW MANY SLOTS ARE AVAILABLE EACH FALL AT THE ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER?

The Program admits 50 new and/or transfer students each Fall. An additional 10 - 15 slots may become available as present students opt to continue their education at C.W. Post as self-advocates and without Academic Resource Center support.

ARE STUDENTS SELECTED FOR ADMISSION DURING THE SPRING SEMESTER?

Students who are presently on campus, are documented learning disabled, and require Center support receive consideration if slots are available. Also, a student who was part of the Center and opted to work without Center support may re-enter the Program if they are experiencing difficulty with course work. They must, however, comply with all Academic Resource Center requirements to re-enter the Program. If any additional slots remain open for the Spring semester, transfer students will be considered.
