Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Are all Residence Halls alike?
The C.W. Post Campus maintains ten residence halls.  Together they house approximately 1940 students-between 65 and 380 students per hall.  A room is typically furnished with window drapes, desk, chair, bed, mattress, wardrobe/closet and a dresser for each student.

Most residence halls are of the "traditional corridor style."  Residents of a "wing" or hallway all share a large common bathroom.  Traditional-style halls are generally single-sex by floor.

The South Residence Complex is different from the traditional-style, in that it is designed in a "suite-style" arrangement.  Each suite includes 3 or 4 double bedrooms arranged around a common living-room type area and a semi-private bathroom.  Each of these living areas is separated by a locking suite entry door.  Suite-style buildings are single sex by suite.

If space is available, you will receive your choice of residence hall and/or roommate(s).  Smokers and non-smokers will not be placed together unless it is at the request of both roommates.  Once assigned, you will be notified by mail.  A general information letter and Meal Plan information will accompany your assignment letter.

What is the proper mailing address to have mail sent to me?
The resident student mailroom is located in the basement of Kings Hall.  All students are assigned an individual combination locked mailbox.  Stop by the mailroom to have a box assigned to you.  Mail can be sent to you at this address:

  • Your Name
    Kings Hall Box Number
    C.W. Post Campus
    Long Island University
    720 Northern Blvd
    Brookville, NY 11548-1300

Is there any off-campus or married-student housing available?
C.W. Post does not maintain any off-campus housing facilities. For your convenience, the Office of Residence Life does have a limited listing of local apartments, houses, and rooms for rent by independent owners. You may stop by the Office of Residence Life during office hours to review these listings. We do not offer married-student housing.

Is there storage space available on campus for stuff I can't fit in my room?
Unfortunately, the Residence Halls do not have storage space available for students' belongings. Therefore, residents are encouraged to coordinate with their roommate(s) and bring only those items to campus which are absolutely necessary, while sending luggage, extra clothing and boxes back home.  Removal of University furnishings (desk, bedframes, mattresses, etc.) from their assigned room or to an off-campus location is a violation of the Housing Contract and will result in disciplinary action.

Who is permitted to live on campus?
Priority for resident hall occupancy is given to all full-time graduate and undergraduate students. All residents must have clear accounts with the Bursar's Office.

Once I have a room, must I sign up again?
Only at the end of the spring semester, for the following academic year.  If you have a room assignment for the fall semester, it will automatically apply for the spring semester as well, unless you request a change.  A schedule and memos concerning room change dates and procedures will be sent to you near the end of the fall semester.  If you have questions about keeping or changing your assignment, ask your RA, BA, or RHD.

Students who have delinquent accounts, other unpaid financial obligations to the campus, or disciplinary ("D") blocks may not continue in residence until these matters are cleared.  If you plan to leave the campus between semesters for any reason (graduation, transfer, withdrawal, etc.) and wish to cancel your housing contract for the spring semester, you must notify the Office of Residence Life in writing by the date announced for such cancellations, in order to avoid being billed for the new semester.

How can my friend who lives off-campus apply to live on campus?
Applications for the fall semester are accepted from off-campus students beginning February 1, and for the Spring semester on October 1 of the previous semester. These assignments are made only after all returning resident students have been accommodated. Priority is based on distance (the further one's home address is from campus the higher priority) and the date of receipt of the application and deposit.

If space is available, you will receive your choice of residence hall and/or roommate. We try not to place smokers and non-smokers together whenever possible.

Once assigned, you will be notified by mail. A general information letter, as well as payment instructions and meal plan information, accompanies your bill.

Do I need to complete my room inventory when moving in?  How do I note if things become damaged during the year?
When you move in, be sure that your room inventory is complete.  If you determine that something has not been noted by your RA/BA, have him/her review the inventory sheet and update it.  If items become damaged during the year, be sure that your RA/BA helps you complete and issue a work order for repair.  If damage was determined to be wear and tear, no bill will be issued.  If not, you will be billed for repair or replacement.  When you move out, be sure that everything is in order and that all furniture is in the room and properly attached.  Review your inventory sheet with your RA/BA after you have removed all your belongings.  If you do not check out properly, your RA/BA or RHD will check your room and issue bills if necessary.

What if I forget my room code number?
If it is during 9 a.m.-5 p.m., you must come to the Office of Residence Life in Post Hall.  Other times, the RA on duty can help you.  If you have some reason to believe that someone else has your room code number, you may have it changed for $50 at the Office of Residence Life.  If it comes to the attention of a staff member that someone else has your room code, you will be charged $50 for a room code change.

If I don't like my room assignment, may I change?
Room changes will be permitted after the second full week of each semester. Forms will be available from your building staff. Be sure to fill out all required paperwork.

How are my roommate(s) selected?
Are you an early riser?  Do you smoke?  What kind of music do you listen to?  Your answers to these questions that appear on your housing application help us team you up with a compatible roommate.  To give you a chance to get to know your roommate before classes start, all housing assignments are completed during the summer, so your roommate's name and address are mailed to you in advance.  Your Residence Hall Director or RA can help you with any questions that may arise once you've settled into your room.

Can I request a specific roommate?
If you both already live on campus, provisions for assigning you together are made during the sign-up procedure.  If you have a friend living off campus who wants to room with you, contact the Office of Residence Life.

Students who live off campus and who wish to live with another new resident student may make a request for a specific roommate on their housing application.  These requests will be honored whenever possible, provided that the applications and deposits are received by the Office of Residence Life approximately at the same time (we suggest you mail them together), and that both applicants request each other as roommates on their applications.  The C.W. Post Campus does not assign rooms or roommates on the basis of race, color, national origin, religious or sexual preference, or academic major.

How does my guest sign in to visit me?
Guests/Visitors will be asked to produce a picture identification (LIUCard, Driver's License, non-drivers photo ID) at the time of sign-in.  All persons must present identification upon request.

How can my friends visit me when the gates are closed?
The gates to the C.W. Post Campus are closed nightly at 11:30 p.m.  Once closed, all vehicles entering the campus must be cleared with an officer at the West Gate booth.  Resident students are required to show a valid LIUCARD.  Non-resident guests are permitted between 10:30 p.m. and 2 a.m., only if the resident student calls Public Safety first and notifies them.  Non-resident students will not be admitted after 2 a.m. unless accompanied by a residence hall student with proper identification.

Does the school have insurance to cover loss or damage to my property?
While insurance is not provided by Long Island University, you will find information and applications for theft and fire coverage, provided by an outside agency, at the Office of Residence Life. You are encouraged to look closely into this option and decided if it is something you would find beneficial.  Also, you may wish to have your parents check on their Homeowner's Insurance Policy.  For an additional charge, most insurance companies will cover personal property at school.

Health-Related Questions

What can I do if I have a personal problem?
You have a number of options, and any one may prove helpful.  You can discuss the problem with your RA, BA, or RHD.  Seemingly overwhelming dilemmas often become manageable after talking about things with someone.  Or, you can go to the Student Health and Counseling Center in the basement of the Life Science Building or call them at 516-299-2345.  If they cannot help you, they will find someone who can.  This staff also conducts various personal skill-building workshops throughout the semester.

Residence Life Staff will gladly offer their assistance in working with you and the Student Health and Counseling Center in resolving your concerns and problems.  The Office of Student Affairs also provides a place for you to voice a specific concern.  If the professionals in this office cannot help you, they will direct you to someone who can.

Signs or handbills that involve solicitation of any type will be considered a policy violation unless they are officially stamped and approved by the Office of Student Activities.  When permission is granted, posting may take place on public bulletin boards with the permission of the Office of Residence Life.  Excessive or damaging postings will result in charges and possibly disciplinary actions.

No.  Personal air conditioning units can only be placed in the window of a hall room if prior written consent from the Student Health and Counseling Center is forwarded to the Office of Residence Life.

Can I bring additional furniture into my room?
Yes, if you have the permission of your roommate(s) or suitemate(s). If you bring any additional furniture, do not remove the furniture already in the room. You are not permitted to remove University furniture to other areas of the building or off-campus.

Can I stay in my room during school vacation? Will I be charged?
Only those students residing in the Residence Halls which officially remain open during vacation periods, and who meet qualifications for year-round housing, will be allowed to maintain occupancy at those times. Because there are expenses related to keeping buildings open and staffed during vacation, an Intersession charge will be imposed; contact the Residence Life Office for details. Please be aware that any student who remains in his/her assigned room (or any other room) during a close-down period without having obtained the written authorization of the Residence Life Office is in violation of his/her Housing Contract, and is subject to disciplinary action. Be sure to read and follow all special institutional memos distributed pertaining to closing/re-opening dates and vacation housing. Contact the Office of Residence Life if you have any questions.

Is housing available during the summer?
On-campus housing is available to students registered for Summer Session classes. Applications for Summer Session 1 are generally available late April/early May. A separate application must be made for each Summer Session. Please note: Buildings used for each Summer Session vary, necessitating a move-over between sessions by continuing residents. The buildings used for Summer Sessions are not air-conditioned.

Are the rooms heated?
Each of the rooms on campus is centrally heated.  It is important that the bottom and top vents of the radiators be kept clear of obstructions (beds, books, stereo speakers, etc.) in order for the heat to operate efficiently.  Portable electric or fuel powered heaters are prohibited in the residence halls, and violators are subject to disciplinary actions.  Window fans are permitted, but must be removed and windows secured when not in use, or when the room is unoccupied.  If you encounter problems with your room heat, notify your RA, BA, RHD, or the Office of Residence Life immediately.

What can I do to decorate my room and not receive a damage bill?
Be creative, however, keep in mind that you must follow fire safety regulations (gang plugs excessive wall hangings etc. are prohibited) and you will be held responsible for the condition (cleanliness) of furnishings in your room, and for the damage or loss that may occur during occupancy.  The use of paint, markers, tape, paste, glue, nails, tacks, and screws on walls, ceilings, furniture, woodwork, doors, and floors is prohibited. Do not move built-in furniture or remove furniture from your room. Anything missing when you check out will be billed to you.

Maintenance Questions

What does the custodial staff do?
They are responsible for cleaning the common areas (hallway, lobbies, stairwells, lounges, bathrooms, kitchens, etc.) every day.  Although the custodial staff cleans daily, you still have a responsibility to keep these areas clean.  You or your wing may be billed for extra cleaning if a common area is messy.  Students who reside in the South Residence Complex are required to clean their own bathroom and living room.  Custodial Services is not provided for individual suites.

What do I do if I need something repaired in my room?
You must contact your RA or the RA on duty who will fill out a work order request. Your signature is required on this form if you wish the repairman to enter your room in your absence. Please note that emergency repairs (e.g., electrical problems, plumbing problems, etc.) will be done as quickly as possible, but due to the large number of daily work requests, non-emergency requests (e.g., screens, painting) may take somewhat longer, so please be patient.

When you move in, be sure that your room inventory is complete. If you determine that something has not been included by your RA, have him/her review the inventory sheet and update it.

During the year if items become damaged, be sure that the RA helps you to complete and issue a work order for repair. If the damage was determined to be wear and tear, no bill will be issued. If not, you will be billed for repair or replacement. When you move out, be sure that everything is in order and that all furniture is in the room and properly attached. Review your inventory sheet with your RA after you have removed all your belongings. If you do not check out properly, you will be charged a $50 improper check-out fee.
