Who is Eligible?Introduction to Aesthetic Education is open to educators of all levels and disciplines, as well as school and district administrators, curriculum specialists, artists, arts administrators, and higher education practitioners.  Aesthetic education is a process in which anyone can participate and learn regardless of prior skills, talent, or knowledge.

What is Aesthetic Education? This seminar provides an introduction to the philosophy and practice of aesthetic education as developed over a 30-year period at Lincoln Center Institute in New York. Aesthetic Education is the key component of Tilles Center’s School Partnership Program. The approach prepares educators to explore the arts with students through experiential activities and supports broader, interdisciplinary goals including the development of perceptual skills, critical thinking, imagination, and teamwork.  The method demonstrates the central role that the arts can have in the classroom, and bears the hallmarks of student-centered inquiry-based active learning. A balance between philosophy and practice, activity and reflection, and personal and group inquiries, will model ways the approach can be adapted to a wide range of educational settings and disciplines.

Activities:  During the seminar, participants engage in a series of workshops led by a team of Tilles Center teaching artists.  These experiential workshops include activities which will focus on theatre and visual art. Each series of workshops relates to a series of focus works- a professional performance and a piece of visual art that participants view during the course of the seminar.

Requirements:

Each teacher is required to maintain a written journal recording experiences and reflections and submit a response paper. Teachers seeking graduate credit will need to register, pay tuition and submit additional requirements as per Long Island University.
