Comparison of Internships and Co-ops

 

Internship

Cooperative Education

1.

An internship focuses heavily on an independent research project, and interns are required to write a 25-30 page thesis or publishable quality paper. In some majors, a student will produce a portfolio.

Co-ops allow students to gain hands-
on experience in their major and a final paper of six pages comprises an analytical component, job description and personal insights

2.

Maximum of 16 credits. All interns must work full time.

One to six credits per semester, depending on number of work hours.

3.

All students with a 2.75 GPA overall and a 3.0 GPA in their major are eligible.

All students with a 2.0 GPA overall and a 2.5 GPA in major are eligible.

4.

Only upperclass students are eligible, must have at least 60 credits.

Any student who has successfully completed the first semester of his/her freshman year is eligible.

5.

Placements are developed and established by individual academic faculty sponsors.

6.

Administrative processes are handled by the Internship Coordinator in the Career Development Center.
