Internship Highlights

  • Non-Honors and Honors students in all majors are encouraged to participate in the Internship program providing that they meet the standard eligibility requirements.
  • To graduate with an Honors Degree, students will be expected to complete a research experience in the Junior or Senior year, culminating in an Honors Thesis. This requirement can be satisfied through an Internship or other directed Independent Study/Research (minimum 3 credit) course with a faculty member.
  • Students will select a faculty Internship Sponsor within their department. Faculty sponsors will provide guidance and instruction to internship students and identify appropriate Internship sites. The faculty sponsors will establish initial inquiries and contacts to determine the quality and appropriateness of the research experience in keeping with goals of the program, as well as maintain regular communication with the intern during the project. The Internship faculty sponsor is also responsible for evaluating the thesis and awarding a grade based on the on-site supervisor's recommendation.
  • Internships are established within individual disciplines in accordance with requirements recommended by the academic divisions.

Interns may be placed in scientific laboratories, businesses or industries, community and government agencies, and artists' studios, depending on the student's major. The independent research and creative aspect of the internship is analogous to what one might encounter in graduate school.

Interns generally work for a minimum of an entire semester, and, in many instances, for the adjacent Summer and Winter Sessions as well.

Approximately 25% of all Internships are salaried. Internships are generally 12 to 18 credits, and may or may not include a salary or other remuneration.

No more than 18 credits of Internship may be applied to the fulfillment of graduation requirements; however, it will satisfy one WAC (Writing Across the Curriculum) requirement.

The charge for Internship credits is the same as the current tuition rate for the semester. However if a student chooses to do an internship during the summer, the charge is for 6 credits at the current tuition rate. If the student elects to do a thesis, he/she may register for a 3-credit thesis (492H) in the following fall semester; thus a total of 9 credits.

All scholarships and financial aid (with the exception of the $250 Merit Scholarship) are applicable to the Internship. All other financial aid questions will be handled on an individual basis.
