For 10 years, the C.W. Post Pep Band has been bolstering team spirit at home football games. Founded in 1999 by Dr. James McRoy, with support from then-Associate Provost for Campus Services, Dr. Pamela Lennox, the band has grown from 20 members to 43 and plays 70 songs to keep the fans cheering.
Dr. Lennox first heard the C.W. Post Symphonic Band perform in 1998, and asked
Dr. McRoy (Director of Bands and Professor of Music) if he would consider starting a university Pep Band to perform on the grandstands at C.W. Post’s Saturday football games. Shortly thereafter Dr. McRoy drew up a proposal that was funded by the Associate Provost’s office and the band was born.
Students, faculty and the community are accustomed to hearing numerous popular songs played at football games, the Fall Pep Rally, and occasionally at the Provost’s All-Campus Meeting. The band’s support isn’t confined to the campus, as they have accompanied the Pioneers to major rival schools for playoff season.
Between plays people can expect to hear tunes varying from the Star Wars theme and Darth Vader’s Imperial March to Gonna Fly Now (Rocky), Freeze Frame, Mony, Mony, La Bamba, Louie, Louie, Star Spangled Banner, Wipe Out, Batman Theme, The Hey Song and Rockin’ Sports Jam.
Every time the team scores, the school’s Fight Song is performed. “Glory to the Pioneers” was written by C.W. Post alumnus Shuichi Komiyama (Class of 2002, M.A. in Music). The Pep Band also plays the C.W. Post Alma Mater at the end of each game.
School spirit has never been so entertaining.
