These degrees offer the exposure to today's broad spectrum of communications media and communication styles which is so necessary for professional success and informed citizenship in today's complex multi-media environment. The curriculum, which includes a media arts core, offers an overview of the field from historical, social and cultural perspectives and exposes the students to the basic skills and practices of the media professions. The student then moves on to advanced study which provides the concepts and skills of the chosen specialization. Modern studio facilities and computer labs, as well as an exceptional internship program ensure that students will be prepared for both entry-level employment and long-term career advancement or graduate study.

The Degree Programs

Electronic Media
Electronic Media students study both audio and video technologies and formats, past, present and future, with an emphasis on digital technology. Students may choose to focus their efforts on one technology, or gain competence in several media. Students have ample access to studio facilities, including a modern digital television studio, and have the opportunity to actively participate in programming WCWP, our FM radio station, and PTV, our campus cable TV station. In addition to 'hands-on' experience, students study the influence of electronic media on our society and learn the ethical and legal responsibilities of broadcast, cable, and satellite operations. Internships at radio and tv stations, and cable services as well the three major networks, offer the student invaluable "real world" experience.

Print and Electronic Journalism
This specialization prepares students for the increasingly complex world of print, broadcast, cable, satellite and on-line journalism. Students learn reporting, writing, and editorial skills and their application in the variety of journalistic contexts. Students also learn to function in radio and video newsrooms, to use and create materials, to publish on the World Wide Web, and back up their skills with an understanding of the complex ethical and social issues associated with decision-making, competition and peer pressure in the electronic news media. An extensive internship program offers interested students an opportunity to acquire 'real world' experience and important contacts.

Public Relations
This specialization provides the student with a broad understanding of the diverse roles and responsibilities of the public relations specialist in today's information environment. Students study the concepts and strategies of public relations in the institutional, non-profit, and governmental sectors, mastering the critical skills of writing, planning, editing, computer use, and business strategy. An active internship program affords students an opportunity to put classroom knowledge to work.
